The West Coast Story
Scattered between two headlands in the protected waters of Barkley Sound, lie two Island chains called the Broken Group and the Deer Group. These islands build a bridge between the end of the road towns of Bamfield and Ucluelet, and offer some the best sea kayaking on Vancouver Island. Teaming with wildlife, you’ll share the waters with Orcas, Grey Whales and Humpbacks in summer months and be guided by eagles and ravens overhead. The Indigenous Huu-ay-aht, call this unceded territory home, and burial sites in caves on the Broken Islands remind us of this rich and thriving culture. We feel a connection to this land no matter who we are and what background we have. Just as mother earth feels one with the moon, planets, and stars in this vast universe. As we grow old we realize that life isn’t laid out in a straight line but in an ever-expanding spiral. It’s a Fibonacci sequence of learning and growing and evolving that all physical and spiritual life is based on. Walking down the beach one afternoon on Diana Island in the Deer Group I stumbled across the most incredible Moon Snail I’d ever seen. Pure, glowing, and ivory white, like a shiny sliver of the moon had fallen from the sky. The energy of the moon guides so many aspects of this earth and our emotions. When I get pulled from myself and become a lunatic each month I am humbled by this connection. Like Moon Snails weaving trails through the sand, our Moon holds creation in balance as it passes through the sky. As a shell mirrors the universe we also mirror our creator.
