The West Coast Story

In 2018 I was itching to trade the cold dark Vancouver Island coastline for some warm Summer waves and Mexican sol. It’s a dream that had been bouncing around in my mind for a lifetime, so I began dreaming up an exit strategy. Inspired by my friend’s recent short bus purchase, I bought a 1990 Chevy Van 30 Thomas school bus online and the scene was set. I laboured for 5 months: through snow, wind, and rain, using mostly salvaged local Red Cedar and recycled materials. My travel partner and I had only 2 rules each day: head south and stay open to whatever experiences came our way. We surfed and explored for 4 months, driving 15,000 kms in total from Victoria to the East Cape of Baja and back. This piece was inspired by that epic roadie and the incredible humans we met around every turn. As we shared campfires, food and stories along the dusty trail, it gave me a deeper gratitude and understanding for this precious life and the gifts that await those who dare to follow their dreams.
